About women and child development department
The major thrust of the programme of the department of women and child development is to ensure the all round development of children and empowerment of women. The department aims at economics development and integration of women into the mainstream of economy, equity and social justices. The strategy adopted for the programmes in the areas of women’s development involves empowerment of women through awareness generation, education and greater emphasis on skill development and income generating activities. So as to enable women to enhance their earning capacity and status in life.
Again to ensure that children get protection against neglect, abuse and exploitation, the department has taken up programmes and schemes to guarantee their basic rights including survival, protection, development and full participation in social, cultural, educational and other endeavour for their individual growth and well being. The emphasis has been on improving the delivery of services to the children and also to achieve convergence of services available for women and children
Aims and Objectives of the department
Promoting social, economic and political empowerment of women through various policies and programmes, mainstreaming gender concerns, creating awareness about their rights and facilitating institutional and legislative support for enabling them to develop to their full potential.
Ensuring development and protection of children through various polices and programme, spreading awareness about their rights and facilitating access to learning and supplementary nutrition for targeted groups, institutional and legislative support for enabling them to grow and develop to their full potential.
OBJECTIVES
- To lay the foundation for development of children below 6 years with focus on supplementary nutrition, non formal preschool education and awareness and capacity building for mother for nutritional and health needs of the child.
- To empower adolescent girls (11-18 years) through nutrition, health care and life skill education.
- To provide a safe and secure environment for overall development of children who are on need of care and protection and those in conflict with law.
- To create awareness on the consequences of child marriage and to prevent child marriage in the state to remove the bias against girl children, to correct adverse sex ratio and eradicate social evils.
- To prevent women and children from being abused and trafficked.
- To enable Economic, social and political empowerment of women
- To provide relief and rehabilitation to vulnerable and marginalized women who lack family/ societal support and independent means of income.
- To mainstream gender concern in policies, programme and schemes of government though gender budgeting.
- To ensure welfare of differently able and senior citizen.
- To provide various support services to women and children through state social welfare board and its network of voluntary organisations.
- To implement Rajiv Gandhi Crèche scheme for the children working mothers and its revision.
- To implement programmes for economic empowerment of women through women Development corporation
- To empowerment women to participate in the justice delivery mechanism through women development corporation
- To empower women to participate in the justice delivery mechanism through women’s commission
- To promote and bring out the creative talent among children by exposing them to various extracurricular activities bal bhavans and bala vikas Academy.

About Women and Child development department

District level: The implementation of the district sector schemes is entrusted to Zilla Panchayath through the Deputy Director at the district Level. Who is assisted by a Women and Child Development Officer. A programme officer and ministerial staff for the effective implementation of the Schemes and programmes of the department. The State sector Schemes are implemented through the Deputy Directors of the district
Taluk level: At the Taluk level, the Child Development Project Officer is in charge of implementation of the Integrated Child Development Scheme as well as Other programme of The Department and is assisted by the Assistant Child Development Project Officer, Supervisor and other supporting staff of the ICDS Project, the grassroots’ level functionaries being anganwadi worker and helper at the village/ward level.
